LàMar A. Owens
Founder and Artist of HydraBloom Studio
LàMar A. Owens is the Founder and Creative Director of HydraBloom Studios, a creative practice dedicated to expressive storytelling through fine art, cultural reflection, and conceptual design. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, Owens draws artistic inspiration from his rich familial legacy—he is the grandson of the legendary William “Billy” Lee Nichols, the esteemed guitarist and musical director for Marvin Gaye during the height of the Motown era. Nichols joined Motown in 1964 and became Gaye’s bandleader in 1965, directing iconic live performances at historic venues such as the Apollo and the Regal Theater.
LàMar’s educational background reflects his interdisciplinary approach to leadership and art. He holds an Associate Degree in Art, a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services, and a Master’s Degree in Business and Leadership. His professional career began in education, where he served in various leadership roles across private, charter, and boarding schools. Most recently, he worked as a Dean of Students in the public school system, where he focused on restorative practices, youth development, and culturally responsive leadership.
With a deep commitment to creative exploration and community impact, Owens transitioned into his full-time role as Founder and Creative Director of HydraBloom Studios. His artistic practice centers primarily on acrylic painting, often exploring themes of identity, memory, and nature. Owens was a founding financial contributor to Afro Surf, a groundbreaking publication that celebrates African surf culture, and has been recognized in New England creative circles for the depth and value of his work.
Through HydraBloom Studios, LàMar A. Owens continues to cultivate spaces for bold expression, healing through art, and reimagining the visual narratives of the African diaspora.
